Hats: a portrait of Dad
These images are a glimpse into the life of the man that I called Dad. The project is a series of digital images exploring the persistent mark of individuality in a culture that promotes brand names and conformity as found in my father’s hat collection inherited after his death.
Using contemporary digital technology, I captured the top and bottom of each hat to discover the inside and outside of the individual. Reading the wear and tear, sweat and tears and shapes and forms of each hat creates a portrait of the wearer and also touches on themes of cultural identity, mortality, and consumerism.
